How I Prepare My Family of Six for Our Annual Family Photos
Family photo sessions are a cherished tradition in our home. They capture the beautiful chaos that is our life with four kids, but let’s be honest—getting everyone ready can feel like an Olympic event. Over the years, I’ve honed a strategy to make the process smoother (and maybe even fun). Here’s how I prepare my family of six for our annual family photos:
Choose Outfits Ahead of Time
This step sets the tone for everything else. I always start with my own outfit. As moms, we’re often behind the camera, so when it’s our turn to be in front, feeling good about what we’re wearing is key. Once I’ve chosen my outfit, I build everyone else’s around it.
Instead of buying new outfits, I shop my kids’ closets first. I’ll check what we already have and figure out if we’re missing anything, like a shirt or a pair of shoes. Before heading to the store, I’ll reach out to friends or family to see if I can borrow what we need. This saves money and avoids buying something they’ll only wear once.
Talk About the Session in Advance
My kids don’t handle surprises well, so I make sure to start talking about the photo session a couple of weeks in advance. I explain what we’re doing, why it’s important, and how long it will take. This helps them feel prepared and involved, which can make a big difference in their cooperation.
Plan Naps Strategically
Since most family photo sessions take place at sunset, I adjust my youngest’s nap schedule. A later nap means they’re well-rested and less likely to melt down during the session. A happy toddler is worth every bit of nap logistics.
Incentivize Good Behaviour
Let’s be real: bribery works. I always promise a fun treat after the session. For us, it’s usually a trip to a local ice cream spot. The promise of ice cream can work wonders when we’re trying to keep everyone smiling and cooperative. Bonus: It’s a great way to cap off the evening and create another happy memory.
Pack Snacks and Water
Kids are always hungrier at the most inconvenient times. I come prepared with snacks and water to avoid any mid-session hunger meltdowns. The key? Dry, mess-free snacks. Think pretzels, crackers, or granola bars. Sticky fingers and fancy outfits don’t mix well.
Bonus Tip: Dress on Location
I’ve learned this one the hard way. To avoid spills, wrinkles, or any other wardrobe disasters, I get the kids dressed once we’re at the session location. They travel in comfy clothes and change into their photo outfits right before we start. It’s one less thing to stress about.
Preparing for family photos doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little planning and flexibility, you can turn what might feel like a stressful task into an enjoyable tradition. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection. And even if someone’s shirt gets wrinkled or a bow goes missing, your family’s authentic love and joy will shine through in the photos.
What are your go-to tips for getting your family photo-ready? I’d love to hear them!
