Tips for how to prepare for Personality Portraits!

Personality portraits are all about capturing your child’s unique expressions, quirks, and personality in a relaxed and fun environment. To help you get the best results from your session, here are some tips to ensure your child is comfortable and ready for their close-up.

Tips for What to Wear!

Clothing choices can make a big difference in how your child's portrait turns out. Here are a few guidelines to follow:

  • Avoid neon colors – Bright colors like neon green or pink can reflect onto your child’s face, creating an unnatural glow.

  • Stick to lighter or mid-tone colors – Since the background is black, dark colors like black, dark blue, or dark gray can blend in and make your child less visible in the portrait.

  • Skip large logos and busy graphics – Bold logos and designs can be distracting and take attention away from your child’s expressions.

  • Coordinating multiple kids? – If you have more than one child in the session, try to avoid dressing them in different patterns that might clash in the final photos.

Arrive a few minutes early - here’s why…

Giving yourself a little extra time before the session can make a big difference in ensuring your child looks their best. Here’s what to do before we start:

  • Wipe faces – If your child had a snack or drink in the car, take a moment to check and clean up any crumbs or smudges.

  • Fix their hair – A quick brush or adjusting any accessories can help keep them looking fresh.

  • Consider a quick outfit change – Sometimes it’s best to dress your child on location to avoid wrinkles or spills from the car ride.

The goal is for your child to feel comfortable.

Every child is different, and some may need a little extra reassurance before sitting in front of the camera. Here’s how you can help:

  • Bring a favorite toy or stuffed animal – Holding a familiar item can make your child feel more at ease, and it can also be a great memory to capture in their portraits.

  • Have a snack or small reward ready – Sometimes a little incentive (like a treat after the session) can keep them motivated and cooperative.

  • Stay close by – Parents are welcome to stay near their child, and in some cases, your child can even sit on your lap. Don’t worry—I have a few tricks to make sure we still capture the perfect portrait!
