Tips to help enjoy your family photoshoot experience with young kids

Here is something I truly believe as a photographer and as a mom - if you have young kids and you want family photos, a lifestyle family session is likely perfect for you. Lifestyle photoshoots include lots of movement, closeness, and fun. They give your kids the freedom to be kids all while capturing your family’s beauty.

But no matter, I understand that the idea of wrangling your family together in half decent clothes to be photographed by stranger can be stressful. So here are some of my favourite tips to help create the least stressful family photoshoot experience for you and your family.

One of the most important things is to stay flexible.

Okay, as a mom of three young kids, I know that this is easier said than done. I even find myself at our family photo’s saying things like “come on, one nice smile” or “get back here right now.”

But in the end, your kids are going to want to wander and explore. It’s okay, let them. It’s likely a new environment so they will want to check it out, maybe throw some rocks or jump around. Giving them the freedom to explore will help make them more comfortable.

Also remember, I’m (likely) new to them. It will take them a little bit to warm up and get comfortable with me. It’s important to give them time to do so. The goal is happy kids and for that to happen, there needs to be flexibility in our expectations.

Remember to keep things fun.

Once you arrive to your session, let go of any expectations you had and have some fun with your family. Trust me.

Photoshoot’s with me always involve cuddling, laughter and lots of movement. The more you embrace that, the more comfortable you’ll become. And the more comfortable you are - the more your family will be as well. This allows me to capture your family’s authenticity and love.

And if the kids find it to be fun, they more likely to be willing participants in the whole experience. So try your best not to yell, maybe even bend the rules a little and you’ll be surprised how much more enjoyable it will be!

Bring bribes for your kids to the photoshoot.

Yep, that’s right - I’m all for a good bribe. Now in some cases this might mean ice cream after the session (usually my go-to) but sometimes, you need something more immediate. Something your kids can see and touch in the moment.

Therefore, you can also bring a bribe with you. Something such as a pack of gummies or mini marshmallows. Make sure it is special to them but not messy. That way, they can have a couple in between shots.

Talk about the session days leading up to your family photos.

The idea of a photoshoot may be overwhelming for some kids. Think about it. They are going to a new environment, being told what to do, and having their photo taken by a stranger. The best thing you can do is talk about the session for days before the actually photoshoot.

Tell your kids all abut my big camera. How it makes cool sounds and create beautiful photos.

Practice their smiles and following certain directions.

Explain that these photos will be like the ones mom or dad take on their phone but with a cool new camera.

The more you talk to them about it, the less surprised they’ll be, which will help them be more comfortable. Comfortable kids = happy kids! Which will always be the goal.
