What's the difference between a traditional and lifestyle newborn photoshoot
Let me start by saying, there is no newborn photography style that is better than the other. All styles beautifully capture your little one. That’s all that matters. However, each style has a different approach to create different works of art. For that reason it’s important to understand what comes with each so you can pick which style is best for what you are looking for. I am a lifestyle newborn photographer, so I don’t have direct experience with traditional newborn photography but have had traditional newborn photos taken of all 3 of my kids by one of my closest friends. I truly love both styles.
Here is what traditional newborn photoshoots are like…
Traditional newborn photos often take place in a studio (can be done at home) and are more posed. The poses include wraps and buckets, there is usually a theme or colour scheme as well. Parents and siblings are included but the main focus is usually the baby. These sessions usually take longer as it’s easier to pose the baby if they are a sleep. This can take some time. These photos are true work of art.
What to expect from a lifestyle newborn photoshoot…
Lifestyle newborn photos often take place in your home. They are mostly laid back and relaxed. The baby is posed less and actually spends a lot of time in their parents arms. Clothing is simple, there isn’t usually a theme or colour scheme. Parents and siblings are very involved in these sessions. A lifestyle session can take less time overall because it doesn’t matter as much if your baby is sleeping. Photos from these sessions are more focused on your families connection.
Which type newborn photoshoot do you choose?
As I mentioned in the intro, there is no wrong answer. If you have no preference in the style, I suggest looking at the portfolios of local photographers, see if you are more drawn to the traditional newborn photos or lifestyle. Then from there pick the photographer’s who art speaks most to you. The one you constantly come back to and go from there. If you are drawn to their work, it’s for a reason.
