What to wear for fall family photos

Truthfully, when it comes to what your family wears for a session with me - I don’t care. The most important thing is that you are all comfortable. However, many of my clients ask me for tips on what they should wear. Each season is a little different. So here are a few tips on what to wear for fall family photos.

Don’t wear matching outfits.

My number one tip is don’t match. I know there are so many cute plaid shirts out there - one for every member of the family but it’s best if you all don’t wear them for your photos. Trust me. When your family matches completely, your photos will lack dimension and texture. Plus if everyone is wearing the same pattern, it can be too busy and difficult to bring focus to a particular subject.

The key is to coordinate outfits, rather than match. Choose a colour palette and coordinate outfits within it. This can include patterns but I would only have one or two people wear patterns and they should be different.

Embrace those earthy tones.

In the fall, there can be some beautiful bold colours surrounding you. Also, some of greenery have begun turning more brown. For that reason, I find it can look best when families where more neutrals and earthy tones in their outfits. It allows your family to stand out in a natural way and compliments the colours in the trees. Together, it creates a stunning portrait.

Wear lots of layers.

My favourite thing about photoshoots in the fall is that the weather is cooler - meaning that everyone is usually more comfortable (less sweating or freezing their butts off). With the cooler temperatures, means way more clothing options. You can layer up with sweaters, jackets, hats and even boots. You can wear a dress if you’d like or jeans with a nice blouse. The options are endless. It also helps when planning multiple outfits. Much easier to find clothing options that each child will be comfortable wearing.

Extra tip - choose your outfits ahead of time. Once you find the colour palette you want to work with, go through everyones closet and start choosing outfits. This will help you determine if everything fits and whether or not you have to pick up some items to complete everyones outfits.
