Things to consider when to scheduling your newborn photos!

Capturing newborn photos is very exciting. It’s such a beautiful and special time for each family. Babies grow so fast and their newborn stage can feel like it’s over in the blink of an eye. So being able to photograph memories from this beautiful time is priceless. For those considering booking a newborn photoshoot, here are some common questions I get:

How old does your baby need to be?

Fun fact - their age doesn’t matter for lifestyle photos. Yes, you of course still want them to be little for the purpose of the memories. But since there are no crazy poses with lifestyle photography, it doesn’t matter if your baby is asleep or not. This is primarily why traditional newborn photographers like to do photos within the first few weeks because it’s easier to execute a pose with a sleeping baby and babies sleep a lot when they are first born.

For lifestyle sessions, your baby spends most of the time in your arms - their favourite spot to be. And if they are captured by themselves, I use a strategy called baby-led posing. This means your baby is placed a certain way (on their back or tummy) and then they can move or stretch to a position they are most comfortable with.

What time of day do newborn photoshoots take place?

Since newborn sessions take place inside your home, it is important that there is enough natural light. For that reason, it’s best for your session to take place between 10am-1pm. The exact time might vary depending on the time of year. You want to make sure you have enough time and a consistent light source in order to capture all the different moments. All beside one good window.

How long will a lifestyle newborn session take?

A typical lifestyle newborn session with me last around 1-2 hours. However, there is no strict time limit because guess what? Your baby is in-charge! If they need to eat, we break. If they need a new diaper - we break again. I also know that sometimes it can take a little extra time for siblings to be ready to join in. I don’t want parents stressing about that. The important thing is that you and your baby are happy and comfortable. From there, we will capture all the special moments!
